3rd Grade: Plan(e)t Power

June 29, 2009

Use picture books to launch inquiry science activities about plants, blow bubbles through a tree, and build a tree with your bodies. Participate in a kinesthetic model to really understand how the Earth, sun and moon move through space.  Learn activities that help students make the connection between fossil fuels and solar energy. You will receive a cd full of activity ideas!

4th Grade The Moon, Munchers and Metaphors

Similes in science, the food chain game, nature journaling, metaphor madness, decoding context clues in fun science texts, word sorting the Fungi and Protista… these and more will help you integrate science into your classroom while covering the AL Course of Study. You will also complete a scientific investigation into the phases of the moon, create a model to test your hypothesis and re-write a trade picture book to clarify misconceptions. Leave bursting with ideas and a cd of the materials used. 

5th Grade Science + Writing = Learning

Hands-on activities that incorporate literacy into your science curriculum!  Nature journaling, word sorts, mysterious objects,  fun ways to write about the rock cycle, sensory details, fold-a-poems, word trees about word chunks, steal-the bacon vocabulary game, … Practice strategies that improve your students reading and writing skills while challenging their scientific thinking.  Learn how to use NSTA-recommended books in an exciting inquiry science activity about symbiosis.  You will receive a recommended reading list plus a cd full of great ideas!

6th Grade: Rocks Rock! Hands-on Earth Science

Earth Science becomes “Fun Science” when you play Rockity-Rock-Rock-Rocks (three types of rock), read stories of Mr. Sandy Stone (rock cycle) and play with Plate Puzzles (plate tectonics). Utilize hands-on approaches to the address Earth Science Content Standards and more.  Topics will also include geologic time; Alabama rocks and fossils; human uses of natural resources.  Teachers will preview curriculum-based literature and receive a cd with lesson plans, and graphics depicting Alabama’s amazing geology.

About the Instructor

Heather Montgomery

Ms. Montgomery holds a B.S. in Biology and an M.S. in Environmental Education.  She has taught both in the classroom and out-of-doors.  Heather is passionate about teaching children about the natural world.  She has directed an environmental center for 6 years and trained hundreds of teachers in the art of introducing children to nature.  She is also the author of science articles for children.
